Our house is on a bluff along the Yadkin River, Northwest of Winston-Salem North Carolina. It faces north toward Pilot Mountain, which is visible in the winter when the leaves are off the trees.
Our property
starts in a cleared field at the top of the hill,
runs downhill through a mature hardwood forest,
drops over a steep bluff,
and ends with a floodplain along the river.
There is a
140ft vertical drop from the top of hill down to the river.
Because of this north-facing steep hill,
we have a micro-climate with many plant species normally associated with the mountains. The biggest are many clumps of Rhododendrum, but they are very shaded so they don't bloom too well. There is also a lot of galax and fetterbush (dog hobble) in the same area.
Wikipedia has a brief entry for the Yadkin River.
The Yadkin River Trail Association helps keep the river clean.
Pilot Mt. State Park is a great park that covers park of the Yadkin.
We're about 1/2 way between the two water monitoring stations below. Since we're in such a wide point in the river, the river doesn't rise as much. During hurricanes Frances & Jeanne, the downstream gage height read 18 ft while the river rose about 8 at our property.
